Lipoprotein (a)[Lp(a)] consists of low-density lipoprotein (LDL)-like particles and apolipoprotein a[Apo(a)], which are covalently bound by disulfide bonds. The level of plasma Lp(a) is mainly determined by genes and is basically not affected by age, gender, nutrition, environmental factors and drugs. It is an independent risk factor for cardiovascular disease.
